You probably don’t want to see the new dessert nearby signs popping up across the country.
You can’t walk to your favorite restaurants or shops, but you can walk a bit further and try your hand at a tasty dessert near you.
The signs, which are in place for about three weeks in the US and Canada, are aimed at discouraging people from eating out more than a few times a week.
If you don’t see the sign, you can always try the following suggestions.1.
Make a note of the time of day it is.
“If you can’t find a restaurant within a 15-minute drive, make sure you’re home before you get there,” said Michael McEwan, an assistant professor of marketing at Cornell University.
“Or you can call your local coffee shop, and ask for a place to sit.”2.
Stop using the word “near” in the description of the restaurant.
Instead, use the word, “nearby,” which helps customers recognize the location and makes the menu more attractive, he said.3.
Ask for a menu with fewer ingredients.
This may seem counterintuitive, but it’s a good idea to use a menu that contains fewer ingredients, McEwans said.
There are also a few tricks to help you avoid the next new dessert:4.
Look for options to eat there.
Make sure you look for options with a little less sugar, fat, and sodium, McEsween said.
“If you’re looking for a more traditional option, you may be able to find a little more,” he added.5.
Avoid eating out that way, too.
You’ll likely be more likely to get the “dessert around me” sign, because you’ve heard it said more than once.
You don’t have to be in the same restaurant or shopping center, McEnys said, but if you have a small group of people in your house, you might be tempted to order something on the menu.
So, if you’re in the mood for a dessert, just look for the signs and go for it.
“Just keep in mind that if you are eating at a restaurant that serves a traditional dessert, then you’ll probably be at risk for getting a new sign and a new menu,” McEwen said.
